When to use the article "the"

  • The definite article “the” is used before singular and plural nouns when the noun is specific or particular.
  • “The” signals that the noun is definite, that it refers to a particular member of a group.
  • Notice the difference:

We live in a small village next to the school. (The school in our village).

Houses are expensive in that neighbourhood. (All houses in that neighbourhood).

  3. This is actually very helpful!! I had a problem in my essay that I managed to get thorugh after hours of thinking hahahaha
this is a sentence taken from one of my drafts: "After her father’s death she became a double shift hard working waitress who tried to save every penny she could to buy the place to set her own restaurant." I was told to think why I could not use a "the" in my sentence. After much thinking I realized that the reason why was that I used a definite article to define a general word like “place”. In my mind I know which place I am talking about but that is not reflected on my writing. I need a clearer reference in order to use the article properly.
Just wanted to share it with you!
