Behind the spinach

What is exactly behind the most famous spinach fan? For decades, millions of children have enjoyed the funny “Popeye, the sailor” in different formats, and lot of us have dreamed of becoming as strong as Popeye, or falling in love with a beautiful Olivia. But were these the only messages conveyed?Popeye and Olivia seem to love() each other, but if we check this relationship deeply, is Olivia free and happy? Is she treated by Popeye as a beloved woman? The apparently love story and the funny actions make the characters entertain the audience, but behind the famous spinach there is a clear chauvinistic message.
The physical appearances of the main characters represent a negative view over females. While Popeye and Brutus’ drawings are big and strong, Olivia is drawn very thin and she hasn’t got any curves. Females are shown weak and shy while males are presented as vigorous.
In addition, we can see in this cartoon that Olivia is treated as an object. Over all the episodes there are two men always fighting for the jackpot: Olivia, but is she considered as an independent and strong woman, or does she always need the presence of Popeye and his spinach to keep her safe(coherence)? We can see how males are always over females.
We cannot help paying attention to who feeds Popeye with spinaches to make him stronger. Of course, it’s our heroine Olivia. The cartoon also points out that women’s role is to feed men and to assist them in all circumstances. Why doesn’t Olivia eat the spinach and defend herself? Male is again over female. The cartoon shows us that women can’t defend themselves. On the contrary, women need a man to protect them from danger.
Popeye is not only the love story and violent cartoon that most of us enjoyed while young, it’s a chauvinist propaganda camouflaged over decades that spreads its chauvinistic message over millions and millions of kids.
Great essay guys! It's really interesting how ideology and stereotypes emerge in everything. As a teacher used to say to me "Everything is politics, even when you go to the supermarket and choose a shampoo... That it's politics too". I like how you have used lot of rethorical questions and the same continuity of the text answers to them.
ReplyDeleteGood essay!!!, I like it! Reading it, I thought how innocent children are. When I was a child I loved Popeye but I didn't like spinach!
ReplyDelete"Why doesn’t Olivia eat the spinach and defend herself?" Very good question!!! Nowadays, Olivia must eat spinach to finish with her suffer!
Good job, guys. The linguist moves I like are: "We cannot help paying attention to who feeds Popeye with spinaches to make him stronger" and "The cartoon shows us that women can’t defend themselves". I really like the use of rhetorical questions. The conclusion is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI always watched Popeye when I was a little girl...and this review made me remember those old times. What I liked best was the questions about why Olivia couldn't eat spinach and defend herself, haha. Great essay!
ReplyDeleteHi guys!
ReplyDeleteI really like your conclusion. It's short but strong. You've included everything that you have to say in just one sentence, and you've avoided redundancy. The linguistic moves I like are "it’s a chauvinist propaganda camouflaged over decades" and "Why doesn’t Olivia eat the spinach and defend herself?"
Great essay, guys!!!
ReplyDeleteI like it because it goes straight to the point.
Personally, the long lenght of an essay may be a deterrent when it comes to reading it.
Congrats!
Loved the essay guys!! It was really interesting! You had since the start of it... I loved the linguistic mve you used to start: "What is exactly behind the most famous spinach fan? For decades, millions of children have enjoyed the (...)"
ReplyDeletegreat job!
Hi Jimena and Marcelo!
ReplyDeleteI've used two linguistic moves from your essay to do mine. They are:
"For decades, millions of children have enjoyed the funny..." and
"But were these the only messages conveyed?"
Thanks guys!!!
Short but it goes straight to the point! That's what I like the most of your essay. Usually, I find myself in troubles when expressing some ideas in a simple and direct manner, but you have accomplished it marvellously well. Also, I liked how the phrase "We cannot help paying attention to who feeds Popeye with spinaches to make him stronger." started.
ReplyDeleteNow, in the conclusion there's a correlative conjunction, isn't it? I'm afraid there is a part of it that's missing.
Thumbs up!
Very good and interesting to analyze!!
ReplyDeleteI liked not only the way you organized it but also the strong argumentative points you chose, and that makes it more compelling.
I also liked that you have finished each paragraph saying..males are always over females....I think it gives a good close.
